Document Drying For Different Kinds Of Things
October 8, 2008
Only those who have used the document drying before would know how useful this process is in restoring the water damaged papers and documents. It is also observed that when people when threatened by water soaked valuable documents rush to get more information on drying procedure. The thing is most of them consciously ignore to lend ears to document drying as they mistake it to be something not meant for them.
The fact is no one is absolutely safe from water damaged and it is better to be informed in advance about the drying proceedings. We cannot blame those uninterested individuals and can fully understand their mental state simply because even we were like them till some time back. We chose not to listen about document drying and finally when our documents were damaged in flood, we were forced to take them to a document drying center.
I remember the day when storm hit the place where we lived and there was incessant rain. The rain was pouring continuously and I could not reach to protect my documents. By the time I could go home, mold had already attacked the wet documents. In a desperate attempt to restore the water damaged documents I browsed and searched for information to deal with the situation.
I got to know about document drying companies and I contacted them for help. They gave me some guidelines and steps to hold on and preserve the ruined document till they reach me. All the documents should be put in freezer till they are taken for drying process. This is to check mold growth and also to keep the document in shape from deteriorating further. Though the drying procedure looks simple, it is highly recommended to hire the services of a document drying company. The trained men with adequate experience and sophisticated tools can deal with wet documents and add a professional touch to the output.
If you are air drying the water ruined books, then spread it evenly on a table. This would accelerate document drying process as air freely circulates in and out of the wet pages. Take an absorbent paper napkin or tissue paper and leave it inside the damp pages. The interleaves absorb the excess moisture from the wet books readily. The interleaves should be removed once they are loaded with water and replace it fresh paper towels.
Once the water is fully extracted from each and every page in the book, leave it undisturbed with some weight over it. This should be done after closing the book and removing all the interleaves. The weight is kept to make sure that all the pages remain intact and the book does not go disfigured.
The above mentioned document drying method was for air drying books and magazines. If you want to dry loose wet documents, then spread them on paper towels or some other absorbent surface in small number. Do not overcrowd the towel with wet documents and see to it that there is enough air circulation. The documents should be turned upside down and dried on both sides. This air drying method works only for small volume.
If a library gets flooded with water and the huge volume of books are wet, then sophisticated document drying techniques and dehumidifiers are used for faster results. Though this document drying process is expensive, it is worth shelling out money if the documents are really important and you cannot afford to lose it.
